Well i'd been waiting quite a while for this gig. It was last night (tuesday) and i had school on so i had no chance to get there early etc. So heres the review: P.S. No cameras or phones were allowed in the venue so sadly i got no pics or vids Me and my mate rocked up at about 5:15 with doors opening around 5:45. The crowd was pretty big, but i was expecting bigger due to Megadeth being there. I estimate around 1,500. I only saw about 3 people wearing Soulfly shirts, the rest were wearing Megadeth (almost everyone) or Arch Enemy, which was kind of dissapointing. Naturally, all the talk was how much Megadeth were going ^to be so fucking cool tonight^....me and my mate really weren't into Megadeth much, we were there for Soulfly. As soon as they opened the doors they told everyone that they couldn't take in phones or cameras, so everyone was pretty shitted off. Caliban started playing before we even got into the venue, we could hear them doing a sound check while we were lining up outside. As soon as i got in i rushed to the merchandise table and bought the Soulfly tour shirt, then went to sit down in the (very shitty and lame) underage area which WAS SEATED. Seats at metal gigs are really shit, dont ever get one (i had to as the floor was lisenced). Caliban = 6/10 - O.K. i'll be blunt hear; Caliban were the filler at the concert. I only saw about 5 people buying their shirts etc. and the crowd didnt really react to them very much. Their sound quality was very good, probably due to the fact it wasnt as loud as the other bands to come. A few songs were cool, but most of it was pretty much just generic metalcore stuff with some solos and refrains added in. They talked a lot to the crowd which is something i really like to happen, evryone cheers up when they talk about your city etc. so its a good thing. Their set was about 35 minutes. Arch Enemy = 8/10 - HOLY SHIT! I'd never really listend to much Arch Enemy before, but i'll tell you this; they are in-fucking-sane live. Sound quality was top notch and EXTREMELY FUCKING LOUD. The loudest band of the night for sure. Their lead singer is also great; she's a woman, but she packs more of a grunt than a lot of the male singers around. The Solo's were fantastic and were nailed perfectly every time. The drummer was also really good, there was a really awesome rhythm to a lot of the stuff; the bass drums made the whole venue feel as though there was an earthqauke under us. The crowd was obviously enjoying their set; but suprisingly there was hardly any jumping etc. but a shitload of crowd surfing. When their set ended i went and grabbed a water to get ready for what i was waitng for....SOULFLY! Soulfly = 8.5/10 The roadies immediatly started getting everything ready almost as soon as the last Arch Enemy song finished. Joe's drums were already made up and were just lifted into place. When the guitar tech came out with max's guitar with the brasilian flag the crowd were going insane. Soon the Dark Ages banner went up and everybody new something big was going to happen very soon. As i was waiting for water i saw Marc behind the stage tuning his guitars and fiddling around. No one else recognised him which was weird. I got my water and piss bolted back to my spot. Then the venue went black. The Arabic outro of ^Prophecy^ started booming out of the massive speakers and people started screaming. I was practicaly pissing my self with anticipation. Joe came out and screamed at the crowd and got them psyched up. Then the outro stopped and in came the double bass pedals of the start of ^Babylon^. Still no where to bee seen where the others, but in a few seconds Max, Marc and Bobby rushed the stage and started their set with a massive synced jump. Even though some people there didnt like Soulfly you could tell they were really happy to see Max still rocking out. The setlist was as follows: Outro of Prophecy Babylon Prophecy Living Sacrifice Roots Bloody Roots (cut down version, no breakdown which was annoying) Seek and Strike Jumpdafuckup/Bring i Refuse/Resis Mars (w/ extended improvised solo which i'll explain below) Frontlines Back to the Primitive Bleed (w/ Ritche) Tree of Pain (tribal drum jam) Eye for an Eye There were problems evident with the sound of Soulfly though; Max's guitars cut out about 2 times and his mic fucked up as well. During ^Mars^ all electrical sounds just completely stopped for about 2 seconds. You could see Max shout out to his crew to fix it and he dissapeared off stage. Bobby and Marc where just looked at each other; Marc shouted something to him and Bobby nodded. Marc then went on to play the solo of ^Mars^ but with a bit of a twist - he improvised as well. Because Max was desperately trying to fix stuff up backstage Marc started playing some stuff i presume was off his solo album. The tranistion was seemles, he was playing flamenco, shredding and doing rythm guitar all in the space of about 10 seconds. The crowd was going insane and was in awe of his classical guitar stuff. Then Max ran back on stage, told everyone to give Marc a well deserved round of applause (or screaming Max talked A LOT to the crowd which was really good. None of the ^Thank you, this our next song^ bullshit, he talked to individual people in the crowd and then psyched us all up to mosh etc. Marc did his fly kick stuff and i was suprised he wasn't wearing a back pack And for all those people who think Soulfly don't do anything on stage: BULLSHIT! Max was moshing like hell, jumping up and down like a little kid. I was pissed off they didn't do all of ^Roots^, the breakdown bit is my favourite part but i guess it's understandable they cut some songs short to fit the 1 hour set they had. I also met Max and Bobby after the show which i'll talk about later. Megadeth = 6/10 What a fucking let down. Even though i didn't know Megadeth extremely well i was expecting to be blown away by Dave and crew.....but they really weren't that good. They didn't talk to the crowd at all and for fucks sake HOW MANY SOLOS ARE YOU GOING TO PUT IN THE SPACE OF 30 SECONDS DAVE? All i could hear was some bloke wanking off his guitar thinking ^fuck me i play good guitar^. Where was the rhythm? Where was the atmosphere? Of course all the Megadeth addicts were almost crying at the site of Dave Mustaine, but jesus, he did fuck all except play guitar. All i can remember is him say ^Hello^ and ^This is our last song^. Seriously, even if you are a huge metal band i want you to communicate with the audience a little bit! At the end of their set Dave asked for applause for his band members, the guitarist got one, the drummer did, and for fucks sake HARDLY ANYONE applauded the bass player. He was just standing there obviously going ^what the fuck?^. Though i guess if your a big fan of Megadeth you really aren't going to hear drums and bass, just Dave doing a solo every six seconds. Seriously though, bad show by the dickheads who didn't applaud the bass player. And of course Dave asked for an applause for himself at the end and crowd went psycho. You could see the Arch Enemy and Soulfly fans going ^who the fuck does this guy think he is?^. After about 4 songs into Megadeth i got a passout and waited around the stage door to talk to Max and then i went back inside to hear the end of Megadeth. Meeting Soulfly - As i was outside of the stage door i saw Bobby come out. I talked to him for a few seconds telling him it was a great show, please come back and do a proper show etc. then he went to the hotel. Seemed like a nice guy. Me and my mate then started talking to 2 pretty rabid soulfly fans of Chilean descent waiting for max like us. Some drunk chick (no idea if she was a family member of max or a roadie) asked me to score her pot for a backstage pass...my reply ^get fucked^. The 2 Chilean blokes then left for the pub as they thought max had already gone; He hadn't (poor guys Me and my mate then rushed in to see if Megadeth were any better..... they were playing ^Peace Sells^ which was pretty good, then they played ^Holy Wars^ last which was cool. Gigantour overall = 8/10 Soulfly got the best crowd response for sure and Arch Enemy was fucking awesome live. Caliban was ok and Megadeth was a big, big let down. |
